Initial creative process:
Each piece comes together a little differently and I continue to learn that the creative process is never predictable or tidy. I mostly work from photographs as compared to working in plein air or onsite for the simple fact that it takes many many hours (often 50-60 hours!) to complete a painting. Because I have to work from photos I need to take pictures from many different angles and start to visualize how I might arrange the elements of a travel print in my mind and on paper. Sometimes I might make rough sketches in my journal to keep my thoughts fresh. At home is where I come up with the final composition from which I paint.
Preparing the watercolor paper, drawing & painting:
I like to use Arches 140lb. cold pressed paper, a high quality watercolor paper. After stretching the paper onto a board I use masking tape to mark off the border and then sketch a light pencil drawing of the entire picture including the lettering onto the paper. Because a successful watercolor painting means working from light to dark, retaining the white of the paper is critical, and so I use a medium called liquid mask. Throughout the painting I use said medium to block off parts of the painting where I need to retain the white of the paper using either a paint brush, quill or ruling pen. Once I complete a section of the painting I simply rub off the masking fluid and move on to a different section of the painting until my entire watercolor painting is finished.
